Poly Joke is our favourite beach. In our opinion it’s Cornwall’s best beach. For lots of reasons. It’s a 10 minute walk from the car park and there’s no life guard or toilet, which means for a lot of people it’s out of the question. Which of course means it’s not completely over run during the school holidays.
It’s also dog friendly. Which means I can take the black dog and let him run riot, as most other people on the beach are there with their slightly unruly hounds too. And there’s a fresh water stream that runs down through the valley and out into the sea, so the black dog is less likely to drink the salt water (the results of which can be very messy).
But not just that. It’s beautiful. Slightly wild. I’ve done a blog post about it before – the grassy pasture of Cubert Common, the walk down the sheltered valley, which is always humming with flora and fauna, the silky white sand and sheer cliffs.
We go there quite a lot – to drink tea, swim, surf and watch the horizon.
Dog friendly – all year
Life guards – no
Toilets – no
Car park – yes
Shops – yes (there’s a seasonal shop at Treago Mill campsite)
Pub – no, but if you’re looking for a pint and pub grub head to the Smugglers Den Inn, a short drive away.
